Frequently Asked Questions

What are cognitive skills (brain skills)?

Cognitive skills (also referred to as brain skills or the foundational skills for information processing)  are the core skills your brain uses to think, read, learn, remember, reason, and pay attention. Working together, they take incoming information and move it into the bank of knowledge you use every day at school, at university, at work, and in life.

Each of your cognitive skills plays an important part in processing new information. That means if even one of these skills is weak, no matter what kind of information is coming your way, grasping, retaining, or using that information is impacted. Here’s a brief description of each of your cognitive skills:

Sustained Attention
What it does: Enables you to stay focused and on task for a sustained period of time

Selective Attention
What it does: Enables you to stay focused and on task despite distractions

Divided Attention
What it does: Enables you to remember information while doing two things at once

Long-Term Memory

What it does: Enables you to recall information stored in the past

Working Memory
What it does: Enables you to hang on to information while in the process of using it

Logic & Reasoning
What it does: Enables you to reason, form ideas, and solve problems

Auditory Processing
What it does: Enables you to analyze, blend, and segment sounds

Visual Processing
What it does: Enables you to think in visual images

Processing Speed
What it does: Enables you to perform tasks quickly and accurately, especially when under pressure

Word Attack
What it does: Enables you to apply phonic and structural analysis skills to pronounce unfamiliar printed words

(Although Word Attack is not a cognitive skill, we include it in our battery of tests as it is an important reading fluency skill for both children and adults alike.)

What sets BrainRx programs apart?

Results driven. Research based. One-on-One.

  • BrainRx programs are based on the latest in brain science research.

  • We test the cognitive brain skills of every client before and after training, using the gold standard in cognitive skills testing, The Gibson Test of Cognitive Skills.

  • 100,000 brains trained (and counting).

  • Backed by 35 years of research.

  • Centres in 46 countries around the world, and growing despite COVID-19 and global lockdowns.

  • More than 100 published white papers.

  • We are experts and a leader in the field of applied neuroplasticity.

  • Ongoing research on our programs and results through independent studies as well as our own research institute, The Gibson Institute of Cognitive Research, established in April 2014.

Why is it so important to test individual cognitive skills?

A cognitive skills weakness is internal and specific
One person might be weak in Visual Processing skills and another weak in Long-term Memory, but on the surface both may seem to struggle in a similar way.  You must measure each person's individual cognitive skills to identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses, which in turn will confirm the cause of his or her particular learning-, attention or memory problem(s).

It is also the foundation on which to formulate the right training program not only for struggling students, but also for average and even advanced students looking for further enhancement.  Untested, cognitive weaknesses can remain undetected for years while hindering a person's ability to learn or concentrate or read successfully.  Guessing at the cause without testing can lead to frustration and wasted time and money.

Maak dit saak dat my huistaal Afrikaans (of 'n ander taal) is?

Glad nie! Ons werk elke dag met mense wat verskillende huistale praat. Om 'n program te doen, hoef jou huistaal nie spesifiek Engels te wees nie.

How are you different from tutoring?

Tutoring simply attempts to re-teach (academic) material/information what should already have been learned but was not.  Before deciding whether tutoring or brain skills development is what is needed, you should ask: "Why didn't he/she learn this the first time (or even the second time) it was presented?".  Unless the answer is obvious (such as missing school/university for an extended period of time), tutoring will likely be a frustrating and expensive choice.

Brain Skills Development is radically different.  We seek solutions with a different question: "How strong is his/her brain's ability to learn or read or remember or concentrate?"

How is testing and training done? Do you place any devices on a client's head or arm for example?

No, we don't place any devices on a client. Both testing and training is done at one of our centres or online via Zoom, is non-invasive and is done with a Certified Brain Skills Trainer on a one-on-one basis.

Do you teach school- and university level students academic work or study methods?

No, we don't teach any academic work or study methods. Instead, we first test and then, on a one-on-one basis, train the brain skills a person uses for learning, reading, remembering, comprehension and concentration.

How do I know BrainRx will work?

Today's innovative BrainRx training system is the result of 35 years of research and even clinical trials.  We have cognitive testing and training centres in 46 countries around the world and have already trained more than 100,000 brains!

Any company offering serious brain training should get serious results.  AND WE DO.  Our results set us apart.

By approaching attention-, memory, learning- and reading problems through improving a person's cognitive skills, we average twice the results in less than half the time of most tutoring or academic reading programs.  People going through our training programs will know that it is working because they will see and experience the results.  Post-training testing results will confirm those changes.

How are you different from online digital brain games and apps?

Digital brain games and apps offers brain-friendly games you can do by yourself on your computer/laptop/phone.  Digital brain games is done at your own pace and intensity.  While these games are good for maintaining current performance levels or tweaking a skill or two, nothing beats the intense, customised workouts of one-on-one brain training for the most dramatic gains in cognitive performance.

How can BrainRx help me if I have suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

A drastic drop in cognitive ability is a common result of most brain injuries.  By building those mental skills back up, many people with brain injuries regain much of their pre-injury cognitive abilities. Our brain training process begins with a Brain Skills Assessment to precisely identify individual mental areas that require the most strengthening.

You will then be paired up with a Brain Skills Trainer who will guide you through researched, targeted, intense, timed drills and other one-on-one as well as digital procedures that will build up those weak cognitive brain skills.

Are all brain training the same?

Not all brain training is created equal.

While there are many levels of workouts for the brain, working one-on-one with a Certified Brain Skills Trainer provides the greatest intensity and the most productive workout for your brain.  In fact, one-on-one brain training is a completely different process - with completely different goals and results - than training you do on your computer or phone, a video game or on a brain game website.

It is also different from so-called 'brain training' done in group-format as no two brains and their level of cognitive skill or training requirement are the same.
